Oxbow Lake is located in the Lake of Bays Township in the District of Muskoka. The lake offers both sandy shallows where lily pads dot the surface and depths of over 30 metres or 100 feet, along with rocky areas just under the water surface that have claimed many a prop. Oxbow cottagers enjoy the expanse of crown lands on the east side of the arm where the cliffs are impressive and challenging. Hiking trails in the area offer adventure for the explorers.
The lake is fed by creeks flowing from both Dotty Lake and Little Oxbow, and empties on the east side into a creek that winds its way to Oxtongue. Water levels rise in the spring and by August are usually low again. Winter brings a thick layer of ice but caution is still needed where the creeks flow and where bubblers protect docks and boat houses.
Wildlife is abundant with fox, wolves, bears, deer, moose and groundhogs, otters and beavers and more. Most of the time they are quite elusive but as in any remote wooded areas, an awareness of surroundings is needed. A wide variety of birds will also fascinate and entertain those watching.
The lake's motto is "Our Lake Community: Respecting, Preserving and Enjoying". This applies on all levels, respecting our environment and each other; while preserving the lake and the tranquillity; and last but certainly not least, enjoying it all!
