2015 Regatta
On Sunday, August 2, 2015, the Oxbow Lakeside Community Club once again was the site of the Oxbow Lake Regatta. Although the day threatened rain, the sun appeared for about 70 cottagers there to participate in the day’s numerous activities. There were many veterans attending the day, but it was good to see many new faces as well – welcome! The day began with the traditional canoe and kayak races, followed by the ever-popular surfboarding race for the children. Pictures of some of these events can be seen below. The remainder of the day’s activities took place on the beautiful grounds of the Community Club’s waterfront. The youngest children started the fun with the Water Brigade, taking turns running to the lake for cups of water and trying to be the first to fill their team’s bucket. Next was the Parachute Toss as all ages of children joined forces in trying to be the first team to ‘flip’ their bean bag from the parachute into the nearby hula hoops. It’s harder than it looks! This game was followed by Stickhandling as participants maneuvered a ball between pylons to shoot into a goal at the end. The children next tried a game called Bean Bag Targeting as they attempted to toss a bean bag into a ring and into a bucket to earn points for their team. Finally, all children joined forces in a big game of Polo as they attempted to move a ball downfield to score into their opponent’s goal. Active and challenging for everyone! All attendees, adults and children alike joined for the favourite Three-Legged Race where some unique ways of navigating the course were demonstrated by participants! This event was followed by the famous Bean Bag Toss. Although we’ve now graduated from first using eggs and then water balloons, bean bags present a different challenge as they can fly and drop in the air unexpectedly. Of course this event is for the bragging rights for winning the traditional Sinclair Cup, which this year was won by the Mossgrove cottage. Congratulations! Activities concluded with the Tug-of war, a hotly contested event where the mainland group of cottagers challenge the peninsula cottagers. The adult division was won by the mainlanders and the children played two rounds with a win for each side. Congratulations teams! Fun was had by all, and smiles concluded all the events. The Awards Ceremony closed out the day’s events with all the children receiving candy necklaces just before the rain arrived. As well, the famous Wylie birch medallions were handed out to all participants, so a big thank you is extended once again to the Wylies for continuing with this tradition! Angie and Peter would also like to thank the Oxbow Lakeside Community Club for hosting and helping out with the event, and to volunteers (Stephanie, Golden and Gary) who help make the day’s events possible. Hope to see many others out on the August long weekend in 2016!
