The highlight of the summer season – the annual Oxbow Lake Regatta – took place on Sunday, July 31 off the shore and on the grounds of the Oxbow Lake Community Club. About 100 people participated in the traditional events – canoe, kayak and pedal boat races, bean bag toss, and tug‘o’war – as well as swim races and team relays for kids and teens.
The teen events were a new addition this year. Interesting to see the creativity used by teams to paddle, steer and turn their surfboards in the “Surfing Safari”. A very cottage-y relay race introduced an ingenious new use for canoe paddles – bouncing a ball 5 times while standing on a log. “Parachute toss” was the highlight of the kids’ relays. Groups of seven circled around a parachute with a bean bag on it, then used the parachute to bounce the bean bag into a target. Not as easy to do as they first thought! At the end, 27 birch medallions were awarded. The first-place finishers in the award events were: – Sue & Shannon for canoe – Lisa for kayak – Cameron & Connor for pedal boat – Wendy for adult/teen swim – Taylor for kids’ swim – Andia, Ben, Tyler & Chris for Surfing Safari, – Michael & Tyler for Junior Bean Bag Toss The “Sinclair Cup” for the Adult Bean Bag Toss has moved into the McRobbie cottage for the next year. In tug’o’war, the Mainlainders showed their collective strength and determination as they edged the Peninsula teams over the line in both the kids’ and adult competitions. Peninsula folks were heard saying, “Just wait till next year!” The highly-prized birch medallions and special candy bags for the kids were made once again by the Wylie family, as they’ve been doing for close to 30 years. Peter and Angie Heydon provided overall coordination and ran the boat and kids’ events. Carol Speers, Kim Gingrich and Keith McRobbie ran the teen events and swim races. The Oxbow Lakeside Community Club once again provided the perfect venue for holding these events. A big THANK YOU to all who helped to organize the Regatta, to our hosts at OLCC, to all who participated in the events, and to all who pitched in to help in various ways. This is what helps make our lake so great!
